Volkswagen’s Chattanooga plant has produced its one millionth Atlas family SUV since assembly began at the site in 2016
Volkswagen of America has built the one millionth Atlas family SUV at its Chattanooga, Tennessee plant, marking nearly a decade of local production of the three-row model and its Atlas Cross Sport derivative. The automaker used the milestone to confirm the all-new 2027 Atlas arrives at US dealers this autumn, with the second-generation Atlas Cross Sport to follow.
Atlas has been assembled in Chattanooga since 2016, joined by the Cross Sport in 2019. The family now ranks among Volkswagen’s top-selling US nameplates, with more than 100,000 units sold in 2025. The automaker said nearly one in three Volkswagen vehicles sold in the United States is an Atlas or Atlas Cross Sport, and that the production split to date runs at roughly 74% three-row Atlas and 26% Cross Sport.

The Chattanooga plant employs close to 4,000 workers. Volkswagen framed the milestone as a validation of its sustained US investment in assembly, local jobs and regional economic activity, with Atlas sold in select export markets alongside its core North American role.
The next-generation 2027 Atlas was revealed at the New York International Auto Show and is positioned around bolder design, updated technology and premium features while retaining the three-row packaging and cargo flexibility that defined the original.
Henning Habicht, Head of Volkswagen Chattanooga Operations, said: “Producing one million Atlas vehicles is a milestone our entire team shares. It reflects years of passion and a commitment to quality. It also speaks to the trust families place in Atlas and our focus on building vehicles that fit their lives.”
