SAE Level 3 autonomy was always going to be a controversial stage, writes Megan Lampinen

The road to autonomy was originally presented as a linear one, progressing along the stepping stones of SAE Levels zero to five (L0-5), culminating in robotaxis that can operate anywhere, all the time. But L3 is proving a particularly problematic proposition for some: a grey area in which the car is both reliant on human supervision and yet fully autonomous, depending on circumstances.
