Compact and kei cars are proving more popular in Japan than larger models, which presents issues for current US trade negotiations. By Will Girling
Standard-sized car registrations declined more than 12% in Japan during Q3 2025/26, according to data from the Japan Automobile Manufacturers Association (JAMA). This was the segment’s worst quarterly performance over the previous calendar year; despite after an otherwise positive start, a drop off began in March and continued over the following nine months.
