Henkel launches PFAS-free coatings for auto displays

Henkel’s new Loctite AF coatings address tightening PFAS regulations while meeting durability and optical performance demands for in-cabin displays

Henkel has launched two anti-fingerprint coatings for automotive displays formulated without per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) or fluorine ingredients, as regulatory pressure on PFAS tightens across Europe, the US and Asia. The products, Loctite AF 8810 and Loctite AF 8812, are built on silicone-based, low-surface-energy technology designed to replace fluorinated coating alternatives without compromising performance.

Loctite AF 8810 is optimised for plastic display cover lenses, while Loctite AF 8812 is formulated for glass substrates and meets a 9H hardness standard. Both products offer a low coefficient of friction for smooth touch interaction and high optical clarity. Durability testing shows consistent water contact angles after 5,000 abrasion cycles and retained hydrophobicity after prolonged UV exposure. The coatings support spray and physical vapour deposition (PVD) application processes and cure in as little as 30 minutes under heat.

The launch addresses growing demand from vehicle programmes incorporating larger and more numerous in-cabin displays, where durability under temperature cycling, UV exposure and mechanical wear is a key requirement.

In a statement, Deckard Sorensen, Vice President, Optical and Conformal Coatings, Henkel, said: “With Loctite AF 8810 and AF 8812, we deliver excellent durability, optical performance, and user comfort formulated without PFAS ingredients, enabling automotive customers to meet the evolving needs of the market and the regulatory landscape at the same time.”
