GM moves global headquarters to Hudson’s Detroit

General Motors has opened its new global headquarters at Hudson’s Detroit, returning to Woodward Avenue for the first time since 1911

General Motors has opened its new global headquarters at Hudson’s Detroit, marking a return to Woodward Avenue where the automaker established its original Detroit home in 1911. The building, located on the site of the former J.L. Hudson Department Store, was designed in collaboration with GM Design and features installations from contemporary artists including Detroit sculptor Harry Bertoia.

GM said the architectural design draws inspiration from Eero Saarinen’s work at GM’s Global Technical Center in Warren, Michigan. The lobby entrance includes a showcase of the automaker’s latest vehicles.

The move reinforces GM’s position as Michigan’s largest automotive employer. The company said it directly contributed more than US$29bn to Michigan’s economy in 2024, representing approximately 4% of the state’s gross domestic product. GM has invested US$17.3bn in Michigan over the past decade.

GM’s Michigan presence includes 38 facilities comprising five assembly plants, 210 dealers, and 1,000 Tier 1 supplier locations across the state.

The automaker previously operated its global headquarters at the Renaissance Center in downtown Detroit. The relocation to Hudson’s Detroit comes as part of a broader urban development project in the city’s central business district.
