GM is investing US$30m in workforce training at its Fairfax Assembly Plant ahead of three vehicle launches

General Motors is investing US$30m in workforce training at its Fairfax Assembly Plant in Kansas City, Kansas, as the facility prepares to launch the Chevrolet Equinox and a next-generation Buick compact SUV alongside the Chevrolet Bolt electric vehicle (EV) currently in production. The investment forms part of nearly US$5.5bn in recent manufacturing investments by the automaker and will support upskilling, cross-training between EV and internal combustion engine (ICE) production, and launch-readiness programmes.

The Fairfax plant has operated since 1946 and is transitioning from Bolt production to a multi-vehicle facility producing both electric and petrol-powered models.

In a statement, Michael Youngs, Fairfax Plant Director, said: “The investment in people isn’t just about preparing for the production of new vehicles; it’s about giving our people the opportunity to build a future their families can be proud of.”

GM said it has invested US$500m in US manufacturing apprenticeships and upskilling programmes over the past five years. The automaker’s Technical Learning University in Warren, Michigan, trains approximately 2,500 employees per year in advanced manufacturing, electrification, and emerging technologies. GM has also provided US$66m in tuition assistance over the past five years.
