Avanci has launched a Wi-Fi 6 and Wi-Fi 7 standard essential patent licensing platform, with Mercedes-Benz as the first licensee
Avanci has launched a licensing platform for standard essential patents (SEPs) covering Wi-Fi 6 and Wi-Fi 7 standards, with Mercedes-Benz AG signed as the inaugural licensee. The first programme under the platform, Avanci Wi-Fi 6 Vehicle, has brought together ten patent owners and is described as the largest joint licensing programme for Wi-Fi 6 SEPs by number of participating patent owners.
The platform builds on Avanci’s existing 4G and 5G Vehicle programmes, which together cover more than 250 million connected vehicles worldwide across more than 140 automotive brands. By consolidating essential Wi-Fi 6 patent rights into a single licence, Avanci said the programme simplifies licensing for automakers and supports the adoption of wireless connectivity in vehicles.

In a statement, Kasim Alfalahi, Founder and Chief Executive Officer of Avanci, said: “Having established a trusted platform for cellular connectivity in vehicles, we are extending that same transparent and balanced approach to Wi-Fi to support continued innovation in connected vehicles.”
Qudus Olaniran, Senior Vice President and Head of Avanci Wi-Fi, added: “Following cellular, Wi-Fi is one of the most important wireless technologies integrated into modern vehicles. It enables efficient delivery of software updates, diagnostics, mapping data, and other high-bandwidth services that enhance the driving experience.”
The Avanci Wi-Fi 6 Vehicle licence covers thousands of patented technologies essential to implementing Wi-Fi 6 connectivity. Additional licensors and licensees are expected to join the platform.
