Ian Henry explores the reasons Stellantis decided to drop PHEVs from its US line-up despite being a market leader for the powertrain

Plug-in electric vehicle (PHEV) hybrids are increasingly popular in Europe: in the first 11 months of 2025, PHEV volumes rose 33% year-on-year and are projected to rise again in 2026. With consumers still not taking up battery EVs (BEVs) at the rate necessary for full electrification, a continued market opportunity for PHEVs could remain in Europe beyond 2035, but this is not likely to be the case across the Atlantic.
