Volvo Cars has started production of the electric EX60 at Torslanda, with customer deliveries scheduled to begin in early summer

Volvo Cars has started production of its fully electric EX60 mid-size SUV at the Torslanda plant outside Gothenburg, Sweden, with customer deliveries scheduled to begin in early summer. The automaker said the EX60 is the first fully electric car to be designed, developed and built in Sweden, and has raised its 2026 production target following stronger-than-forecast early demand.

The company said retail orders have run considerably above internal forecasts in nearly all major European markets, led by Sweden and Germany. Order books for the United States and Asian markets will open later this spring. Volvo plans to keep Torslanda open for an extra week this summer to absorb the uplift, a first for the plant.

The EX60 has a preliminary WLTP range of up to 810 km, a 10-80% charge time of 16 minutes on a 400 kW charger, and is priced in line with Volvo’s XC60 plug-in hybrid. The model was revealed in January.

Torslanda has undergone around SEK 10bn (US$1.1bn) of investment to prepare for EX60 production, including mega-casting capability, a new battery assembly plant, and refurbished paint and final assembly lines.

In a statement, Håkan Samuelsson, Chief Executive of Volvo Cars, said: “Today is an important milestone for our company and for Sweden as a whole, as we start to build the first EX60 customer cars. We are now focused on a steady ramp-up of high-quality EX60 production, making sure this game-changing car will be a profitable growth driver in the coming years.”
