Volkswagen begins production of ID.Unyx 08 with Xpeng in Hefei

Volkswagen has begun series production of the ID.Unyx 08, a fully electric full-size SUV developed jointly with Chinese automaker Xpeng, at the Volkswagen Anhui plant in Hefei. The vehicle reached production maturity 24 months after the start of the cooperation and is scheduled for market launch in China in the first half of 2026.

The ID.Unyx 08 is Volkswagen’s first fully connected electric SUV and features 800-volt ultra-fast charging technology, L2 advanced driver assistance systems (ADAS) and over-the-air (OTA) update capability. The model was developed through Volkswagen’s China Tech Centre (VCTC), which led product design, technical validation, quality standards and driving dynamics tuning while integrating locally developed technologies.

The ID.Unyx 08 is the first of two Volkswagen models resulting from the Xpeng partnership announced in 2023, with the second due to launch this year. Volkswagen Group plans to introduce more than 20 new electric vehicle models in China in 2026 alone, as part of a target to bring 50 new electric models to the market by 2030. The cooperation has also produced the China Electronic Architecture, a jointly developed zonal electrical and electronic platform for future Volkswagen models in China.

Ralf Brandstätter, Member of the Board of Management of Volkswagen AG responsible for China, said: “The ID.UNYX 08 is the first Volkswagen model in a new generation of smart electric vehicles that will carry our strengths into the electric age. The car is fully tailored to Chinese customer needs, equipped with cutting-edge technology, and was developed locally in less than two years.”
