Uber and Nvidia will deploy L4 autonomous vehicles across 28 cities globally by 2028, starting in Los Angeles and San Francisco in 2027
Uber and Nvidia have announced plans to deploy a global fleet of Nvidia software-driven autonomous vehicles on Uber’s ride-hailing network, beginning in Los Angeles and San Francisco in the first half of 2027 and expanding to 28 cities across North America, Europe, Australia and Asia by 2028. The announcement marks Nvidia’s entry as a full-stack Level 4 software provider for commercial robotaxi operations.
The deployment will be built on the Nvidia DRIVE Hyperion platform and powered by Alpamayo, a reasoning-based AI model designed to handle complex driving scenarios using chain-of-thought logic. Nvidia describes Alpamayo as intended for unpredictable situations such as construction zones and erratic pedestrian behaviour that conventional autonomous systems struggle to address.

Each launch city will follow a phased rollout: an initial data-collection phase to train Alpamayo on city-specific driving conditions, followed by an operator-led launch before transitioning to fully driverless Level 4 operations. Nvidia’s automotive OEM partners will supply the vehicles running the software stack.
In a statement, Dara Khosrowshahi, Chief Executive of Uber, said: “By expanding our partnership with Nvidia and combining advanced AI with Uber’s global network and operating experience, we are laying the foundation for an increasingly multi-player AV world, ensuring broad commercialisation and helping to bring robotaxi service to more riders over time.”
Jensen Huang, Founder and Chief Executive of Nvidia, added: “Uber is building one of the world’s most expansive autonomous ride-hailing platforms. We are delighted to connect Nvidia’s large ecosystem of robotaxi-ready partners to the Uber network to bring the magic of robotaxis to cities worldwide.”
