Tesla’s Q4 financials suggested a major change in strategy, away from cars and towards AI and robotics. Ian Henry looks at the data underlying this switch

Tesla has decided to drop two of its vehicles, the Model X and Model S, sales of which have fallen significantly. Given that increasing competition in electric vehicles (EVs) from Chinese and legacy Western and Japanese OEMs have eroded Tesla’s previous dominance, the end of Model 3 and Model Y production might also happen sooner than expected. Certainly, Chief Executive Elon Musk seems more interested in humanoid robots and AI-driven autonomous vehicles, as well as larger vehicles like the Cybertruck and Semi-Truck.
