Škoda doubles BEV range as it marks 35 years in VW Group

Škoda Auto marks 35 years in the Volkswagen Group, having grown from a two-model range to more than one million deliveries in 2025

Škoda Auto is marking 35 years as part of the Volkswagen Group, during which the Czech automaker has grown from a two-model, 200,000-unit-per-year producer into a brand delivering more than 1,040,000 vehicles in 2025, making it the third best-selling brand in Europe. The milestone coincides with the opening of a new battery production facility in Mladá Boleslav, representing an investment of €205m (US$235.6m), which makes Škoda the Volkswagen Group’s largest manufacturer of battery electric vehicle (BEV) battery systems.

Volkswagen acquired an initial 31% stake in Škoda on 16 April 1991 following an agreement signed on 28 March that year, increasing its holding to 100% by May 2000. The partnership followed the fall of the communist regime in Czechoslovakia in 1989, after which Volkswagen was selected from 24 potential partners during the privatisation of the state-owned automaker.

Škoda operates production plants in the Czech Republic, Slovakia, Kazakhstan and India, and manufactures vehicles in Vietnam and Ukraine through local partnerships. India has become a strategic second pillar for the brand, with record deliveries in 2025 driven by the Kushaq, Slavia and Kylaq models.

By the end of 2026, Škoda will double its BEV portfolio with the addition of the Epiq urban crossover and the seven-seater Peaq, both developed within the Volkswagen Group’s Electric Urban Car Family.
