Any hope that the US Supreme Court’s ruling might benefit automakers has been put into question by Trump’s newly-proposed tariffs. By Will Girling

On 20 February, after almost six months of deliberation, the Supreme Court of the US (SCOTUS) struck down President Donald Trump’s authority to impose tariffs through the International Emergency Economic Powers Act (IEEPA). Notably, however, this decision does not affect tariffs on automotive products, steel and aluminium, which were levied through Section 232 of the Trade Expansion Act of 1962.
