Maruti Suzuki has acquired land in Gujarat for a new plant with annual production capacity of one million vehicles
Maruti Suzuki India, the Indian subsidiary of Suzuki Motor Corporation, has acquired approximately seven million square metres of land in Sanand, Gujarat for a new automobile production plant with annual capacity of one million vehicles. The land acquisition cost INR 49.6bn, following a basic agreement reached with the Gujarat state government in January 2024.
The new facility will be Maruti Suzuki’s second plant in Gujarat, adding to its existing Hansalpur facility which opened in 2017. Suzuki said the location offers a well-developed supply chain and infrastructure, with proximity to ports making it suitable as both a domestic production base and an export hub for complete vehicles.
The company said the investment prepares for future growth in the Indian automobile market and expansion of vehicle exports from India, supporting the government’s Make in India initiative.
Maruti Suzuki currently operates four production plants across India with combined annual capacity of 2.6 million units: Gurugaon and Manesar in Haryana, Hansalpur in Gujarat, and Kharkhoda in Haryana which opened in 2025. The new Sanand facility will increase total capacity to 3.6 million units per year.
Suzuki has been expanding its Indian manufacturing footprint as the country’s passenger vehicle market continues to grow. Maruti Suzuki is India’s largest automaker by sales volume.
