General Motors sold more than 246,000 V2H-capable EVs in the US in 2025 and is now exploring a leasing model to broaden access to its home energy systems
General Motors sold more than 246,000 vehicle-to-home (V2H) capable electric vehicles in the United States in 2025, as the company ranked among the top two EV sellers in the country for the year. Through its GM Energy division, the automaker pairs V2H-capable EVs with home energy management systems that allow vehicles to supply power to a properly equipped home during a grid outage.
GM Energy is exploring a leasing programme for its home energy management systems and PowerBank home batteries, aimed at allowing homeowners to pay monthly rather than upfront. The company says further details will be shared closer to launch.

In Texas, GM operates a Free Charge Nights programme with Reliant Energy, enabling owners to charge overnight and draw on stored energy during peak hours. Pacific Gas and Electric’s vehicle-to-everything (V2X) pilot, which extends bidirectional power capability to the home, grid and other devices, offers up to US$4,500 in incentives for eligible applicants on qualifying GM Energy products. GM Energy says internal testing for vehicle-to-grid capability has returned positive results, with utility certification work now under way.
In a statement, Wade Sheffer, Vice President of GM Energy, said: “We built GM Energy to unlock new benefits unique to EVs. With leasing, we’re removing a barrier and trying to make this technology available to any homeowner, not just GM EV owners. This is about giving people a smarter way to manage their energy and getting more value out of every dollar they spend.”
