China is Germany’s most significant global trade partner, but automotive exports are suffering as the Chinese industry ascends. By Will Girling
China was Germany’s top global trading partner in 2025, with combined exports and imports totalling €251.8bn (US$296.6bn), according to Statistisches Bundesamt. However, there’s a problem: a 24 February study published by the German Economic Institute (IW) claims that automotive products, the country’s primary export, have declined more than 50% from 2022 levels, to approximately €14bn in 2025.
