GAC partners with Grab to deploy EVs in Asia

GAC International and Grab have signed a partnership to deploy 20,000 electric vehicles across Southeast Asia within two years

GAC International and Grab have announced a strategic partnership targeting deployment of 20,000 electric vehicles (EVs) across six Southeast Asian countries within two years, as the Chinese automaker expands beyond product exports into integrated mobility services. The partnership will introduce three Aion models—Aion Y, Aion ES and Aion V—to Grab’s ride-hailing fleet across the region.

The agreement extends beyond vehicle supply to include system integration, with the companies exploring incorporation of the Grab driver app into GAC’s intelligent cockpit system to improve order acceptance efficiency and driving safety. The parties will also collaborate on after-sales support systems.

Electric vehicle sales in Southeast Asia increased by nearly 50% year-on-year in 2024, according to the International Energy Agency. GAC said the partnership represents a shift from vehicle sales to delivering “full-cycle mobility value” through integrated products, connectivity and data services.

In a statement, GAC said the cooperation will enable “high-frequency exposure to millions of users, rapidly building brand awareness, market reputation, and deeper market insights that enables future models to accurately meet real overseas scenarios.”

The companies plan to deepen cooperation across vehicle connectivity, data services, charging infrastructure and after-sales networks. GAC and Grab signed the agreement on 7 January, with Wang Shunsheng, Vice President of GAC International, and Dylan Choon, Regional Manager of Strategic Partnerships at Grab, representing their respective companies.
