Ashok Leyland has brought back the Taurus and Hippo nameplates for its heavy-duty tipper and tractor portfolios
Ashok Leyland has reintroduced its Taurus and Hippo heavy-duty truck ranges, with Taurus serving as the company’s high-horsepower tipper line and Hippo anchoring its tractor portfolio, both built on the automaker’s AVTR modular platform. The trucks are powered by an 8.0-litre A-Series six-cylinder engine delivering 360 HP and 1,600 Nm of torque, and are targeted at mining, infrastructure, and construction applications across India.
The Taurus nameplate was originally known as India’s first multi-axle truck, while the Hippo built its reputation as a heavy hauler from the 1980s to the early 2000s. Both ranges are now available for bookings and deliveries through Ashok Leyland dealerships nationwide.

In a statement, Shenu Agarwal, Managing Director and Chief Executive of Ashok Leyland, said: “Taurus and Hippo are purpose-built for heavy-duty requirements of mining, infrastructure, and construction applications. The new truck range is powered by Ashok Leyland’s A-Series 6-cylinder engines, now with industry-leading peak torque and power, delivering unmatched durability and reliability, higher productivity and faster turnaround times.”
Sanjeev Kumar, President of Medium and Heavy Commercial Vehicles at Ashok Leyland, added: “Tippers and tractors are among the fastest-growing segments in the MHCV industry, playing a critical role in India’s infrastructure growth.”
