Adient has announced Sculpted Soft Trim, a formed seat trim solution that uses an automated process to reduce sewing labour and enable complex three-dimensional surfaces previously difficult to achieve with conventional cut-and-sew methods. The product is available globally and entering production on seats across multiple OEMs this year.
The process allows a single trim pattern to replace what previously required up to twelve individual patterns and sew lines, with child seat anchor locations in rear seats cited as a typical application. Concave geometries, embossed and debossed textures, and graphic or badging details can all be incorporated within the same tool and process. Firmness can also be varied across a single piece.
Adient says cycle times are reduced to around 50% of traditional forming methods. The solution is compatible with a wide range of fabric and vinyl materials, and dissimilar materials can be pre-sewn before forming.
