Polestar revises net-zero car deadline to 2035

Polestar said greenhouse gas emissions per car sold have fallen 31% since 2020, according to its 2025 sustainability report

Polestar said greenhouse gas emissions per car sold have fallen 31% since 2020, according to its 2025 sustainability report published on 28 April. The Swedish electric car maker logged the cut over a period in which annual retail sales rose to more than 60,000 vehicles across 28 markets and three new models reached production.

The Gothenburg-based company said the per-car emissions cut has been driven by greater use of renewable energy in battery production and manufacturing, the use of lower-carbon materials and rising volumes of the Polestar 4. Europe remains its largest region, accounting for more than 75% of sales.

Polestar said the figures keep it below its own emissions reduction curve as it works towards a target of becoming a climate-neutral company by 2040. The company has also revised the timeline for its Polestar 0 net-zero car project, pushing the goal from 2030 to 2035 to reflect the scale of the technical work involved.

Mission 0 House, the Gothenburg research consortium tied to the Polestar 0 project, was formally set up in 2025 with close to SEK100m (about US$10.5m) of funding over five years. “If you are not reducing emissions while growing, you are choosing not to,” Michael Lohscheller, Chief Executive of Polestar, said. “Electrification delivers clear value for customers: lower running costs, lower emissions and greater peace of mind.”
