BASF Coatings has received TÜV Rheinland certification for the carbon footprint calculation method in its Eco Impact Assessment tool
BASF Coatings has received TÜV Rheinland certification for the calculation methodology of its Eco Impact Assessment tool, confirming compliance with the greenhouse gas (GHG) protocol for corporate carbon footprint calculations. The tool, integrated into the cloud-based Refinity platform, has been validated across 11 European countries since 2025 and is set to expand into further regions.
The Eco Impact Assessment applies a life cycle assessment-based measurement approach, evaluating material and energy flows across body shop operations including spraying and drying, product consumption, waste management and fleet. The certification provides body shops with a validated basis for sustainability reporting, investment decisions and engagement with insurers and green rating programmes.

In a statement, Dr Markus Piepenbrink, Director Global Sustainability at BASF Coatings, said: “Based on the real-life operational data and on-site measurements, Refinity Eco Impact Assessment provides a comprehensive view of ecological, economic and social performance. With minimal effort required from body shops and expert support from BASF Coatings consultants, sustainability becomes a measurable and manageable business factor.”
Dr Rahel Reichmann, Head of Sustainability Automotive Refinish Coatings at BASF Coatings, added: “Independent certification by TÜV Rheinland is a strong signal to our customers that the Eco Impact Assessment delivers credible, consistent, and actionable results. By creating a transparent corporate carbon footprint, the Eco Impact Assessment enables meaningful benchmarking, from individual body shops to MSO networks and insurer repair programs. At the same time, the results provide practical, actionable recommendations that help body shops identify improvement opportunities and turn sustainability measures into measurable efficiency and cost advantages.”
