Ampere and Basquevolt partner on lithium metal batteries

Ampere has signed a joint development agreement with Basquevolt to accelerate lithium metal-based battery technology for future EVs

Ampere, Renault Group’s electric vehicle (EV) and software subsidiary, has signed a joint development agreement with Basquevolt to accelerate development of lithium metal-based battery technology. The partnership aims to meet the requirements of Pre-A Sample prototypes for future EVs.

Basquevolt’s lithium metal-based battery technology offers higher energy density compared to current lithium-ion batteries with liquid electrolyte. The technology combines polymer electrolyte with an advanced anode, which the companies say could enable compact, lightweight battery packs with improved thermal stability and fast-charging capabilities.

In a statement, Pablo Fernández, Chief Executive of Basquevolt, said: “Entering this next phase with Ampere marks a major milestone in our mission to bring polymer electrolyte technology closer to the mass market.”

Nicolas Racquet, Vice President of Vehicle and Powertrain Engineering at Ampere, added: “Together, we are focused on validating performance in real-world automotive conditions and accelerating the transition to next-gen EV batteries that meet the evolving needs of our customers.”

The two companies have been collaborating for more than 12 months. Basquevolt claims its polymer electrolyte enables a simpler manufacturing process, resulting in approximately 30% lower capital investment per GW/h and 30% less energy consumption per kW/h produced.
