Suzuki opens second Indian biogas plant in Gujarat

Suzuki has opened its second biogas plant in India, in Gujarat, following its first facility which opened in December 2025

Suzuki Motor Corporation has opened its second biogas plant in India, the Banas Suzuki Biogas Plant in Bhukhala, Banaskantha district, Gujarat, following the inauguration of its first facility at Agthala in December 2025. The plant will produce biogas as fuel for compressed natural gas (CNG) vehicles and organic fertiliser from cow dung, with the automaker having agreed to construct five biogas plants in total under a September 2023 agreement with the National Dairy Development Board and Banas Dairy.

The opening ceremony on 18 January was attended by Acharya Devvrat, Governor of Gujarat, Shankar Chaudhary, Chairman of Banas Dairy and Speaker of Gujarat Legislative Assembly, and Kenichiro Toyofuku, Managing Officer and Executive General Manager of Biogas Operations at Suzuki.

The facility covers approximately 27,000 square metres and can process up to 100 tonnes of cow dung daily, producing approximately 1.5 tonnes of biogas per day. Suzuki said this is equivalent to the fuel required for around 850 CNG vehicles daily.

CNG vehicles account for approximately 20% of the passenger car market in India. Suzuki said biogas is a carbon-neutral fuel and that the operation of biogas plants contributes to improved energy self-sufficiency, job creation and enhanced rural income through the purchase of cattle dung.
