The first 100 Australian customers who pre-order the new Suzuki e Vitara small electric SUV will pay $46,990 drive-away – making it the most expensive Suzuki in local showrooms – before prices are increased from the 101st vehicle sold or July 1, whichever comes first.

Available to order now ahead of first customer deliveries, Suzuki has announced two model grades for the e Vitara, which is made in India and based on an entirely different platform to the regular petrol-powered Vitara, and features its own chunky styling and character.

The entry-level e Vitara Motion will be priced from $49,990 drive-away from July 1, effectively excluding the $3000 early-buyer discount, while the top-shelf e Vitara Ultra will be priced at $56,990 drive-away until the promotion ends, rising to $58,990 drive-away thereafter.

For reference, the existing petrol-powered Vitara 2WD starts from $34,590 drive-away, while the Vitara 4WD – powered by the same 1.4-litre turbocharged four-cylinder petrol engine and six-speed automatic – is priced from $39,490 drive-away.

The e Vitara is also considerably more expensive than other small electric SUVs, and even some larger alternatives.

The BYD Atto 2, launched in Australia earlier this year, is slightly longer at 4375mm and priced from $31,990 before on-road costs. It comes with a 130kW front-mounted electric motor and a 345km WLTP range.

By comparison, the e Vitara measures 4275mm long, 1800mm wide and 1635mm tall on a 2700mm wheelbase.

The entry-level e Vitara Motion is also front-wheel drive and comes with a less powerful 106kW/193Nm motor and a 49kWh lithium iron phosphate (LFP) battery offering a shorter 344km WLTP range.
