Toyota has launched sales of its US-built Tundra and Highlander in Japan under a new bilateral certification framework
Toyota Motor Corporation has begun selling two US-manufactured models in Japan under a regulatory framework that took effect on 16 February 2026, which removes the requirement for Japan-specific certification testing on American-built vehicles. The Tundra full-size pickup truck and Highlander sport utility vehicle are now available through Toyota Mobility Tokyo Inc., with nationwide sales scheduled for summer 2026.
Built at Toyota Motor Manufacturing Texas, the Tundra is powered by a 3.4-litre twin-turbo V6 engine paired with a 10-speed automatic transmission. The model measures 5,930mm in length and is priced at JP¥12,000,000 (US$75,205), with a target sales volume of 80 units per month following its nationwide launch.

The Highlander, produced at Toyota Motor Manufacturing Indiana, uses a 2.5-litre series-parallel hybrid system with an electric motor delivering a maximum combined output of 184kW, with E-Four all-wheel drive fitted as standard across all grades. The three-row, seven-seat SUV is priced at JP¥8,600,000 (US$53,897) and targets 40 monthly sales nationwide.
Toyota said the Camry, also produced at a US facility, will go on sale in Japan as soon as preparations are complete. The automaker said the introduction of the three models is intended to address diverse customer needs and strengthen Japan-US trade relations.
