Scania L-series tops Euro NCAP truck rankings

Five of seven trucks tested in Euro NCAP’s latest Regional Distribution round have been awarded the maximum five-star safety rating, with all five also earning the CitySafe urban-safety label. The tally more than doubles the two five-star trucks recorded when Euro NCAP first tested commercial vehicles in 2024.

The Scania L-series led the leaderboard with an overall score of 90%, which Euro NCAP credited to its low-entry cab and direct vision, alongside 93% in pedestrian and cyclist protection. The Mercedes-Benz Actros and Volvo FM each scored 88%, followed by the Scania P-series on 87% and the MAN TGM on 80%.

Euro NCAP praised DAF for including many safety features as standard, while noting other manufacturers still rely on optional equipment to reach five-star scores. The Renault Trucks D Medium and DAF XD received four-star and three-star ratings on overall scores of 68% and 62% respectively.

Each truck is assessed across Safe Driving, Crash Avoidance and Post-Crash Safety. The MAN TGM marks MAN’s first five-star truck under the programme, while the Scania P-series also earned a separate five-star rating in the Utility category.

In a statement, Matthew Avery, Director of Strategic Development at Euro NCAP, said: “Five five-star trucks in one round of testing is a very welcome record.” Euro NCAP will test City Distribution trucks up to 12 tonnes in November and is consulting on revised protocols from 2028.
