Rivian partners with G+D, AT&T on R2 connectivity

Giesecke+Devrient will provide eSIM hardware and remote management infrastructure for the upcoming Rivian R2

Giesecke+Devrient (G+D), Rivian and AT&T have announced a collaboration to launch Rivian’s upcoming R2 with GSMA SGP.32-enabled eSIM technology and 5G connectivity. The R2 will be among the first vehicles globally to support SGP.32, the newly finalised eSIM standard designed for IoT and automotive applications.

The standard enables a single-SKU approach, allowing automakers to deploy vehicles globally while reducing the complexity of managing multiple mobile network operator integrations across regions. Rivian will use G+D’s automotive-grade eSIM hardware and eSIM IoT Remote Manager infrastructure, while AT&T will serve as the initial mobile network provider in the US.

G+D says the architecture allows Rivian to add or change network operator partners over time as the vehicle expands into new regions without requiring hardware changes. The connectivity platform will support in-vehicle services, over-the-air updates and future digital features.

In a statement, BeekGek Lim, Global Head of Business Line Digital Offerings for G+D, said: “With G+D’s secure eSIM hardware and compliant remote management capabilities, Rivian can deploy a single global hardware SKU while retaining full flexibility to manage connectivity remotely and securely throughout the vehicle lifecycle.”

Brandon Blumber, Global Director of Business Development at Rivian, added: “We chose G+D for their expertise in secure, scalable eSIM technology and their ability to support a global launch.”
