Renesas launches RH850/U2C automotive controller

Renesas says the RH850/U2C targets chassis, safety systems, battery management, and body control applications

Renesas Electronics has announced the RH850/U2C, a 32-bit automotive microcontroller built on a 28nm process, targeting applications including chassis and safety systems, battery management, body control, and lighting. The Japanese semiconductor supplier says the device extends its RH850 lineup as a lower-end option alongside the high-end RH850/U2B and mid-range RH850/U2A products.

The MCU combines four CPU cores operating at up to 320MHz, including two lockstep cores, with up to 8MB of on-chip flash memory. Renesas says developers currently using its RH850/P1x or RH850/F1x devices can transition to the new MCU to meet the requirements of modern electrical and electronic architectures.

The RH850/U2C supports interfaces including Ethernet TSN, CAN-XL, and I3C, alongside established protocols such as CAN-FD and LIN. The device supports functional safety up to ASIL D under ISO 26262 and complies with the ISO/SAE 21434 cybersecurity standard.

In a statement, Satoshi Yoshida, Vice President of the High-Performance Computing MCU Division at Renesas, said: “The RH850/U2C combines performance, a rich feature set, and compliance with key industry standards to meet the requirements of next-generation ECUs.”

Christoph Wenger, Chief Expert Semiconductor at Vehicle Motion at Bosch, added: “The 28nm MCUs from Renesas offer strong performance and quality, and we look forward to continuing our collaboration.”

The RH850/U2C is available now.
