The US$6.4m project covers WIM sensors, vehicle identification, and tyre anomaly detection across key interstate corridors
Quarterhill has been awarded a contract valued at approximately US$6.4m to support the expansion of the Massachusetts Department of Transportation’s (MassDOT) weigh-in-motion (WIM) infrastructure programme. The intelligent transportation systems (ITS) provider will oversee the installation of 15 new WIM stations and deploy a comprehensive commercial vehicle compliance software platform across key interstate and state highway corridors.
Working through Coviello Electric, Quarterhill will furnish and install WIM sensors, vehicle identification systems, tyre anomaly detection equipment, and associated roadside technology across MassDOT Districts 1 through 5. The project spans Interstates 84, 90, 91, 93, 95, 195, 290, 295, 395, and 495, along with Routes 3, 24, and 146, and includes provisions for software integration with existing MassDOT systems.
In a statement, Chuck Myers, Chief Executive Officer of Quarterhill, said: “We are pleased to support MassDOT’s efforts by delivering a scalable WIM deployment that improves roadway safety, strengthens data visibility, enhances enforcement capabilities, and supports long-term transportation planning.”
The WIM stations will provide detailed commercial vehicle weight, tyre safety, and traffic data to support infrastructure monitoring and enforcement efforts. By helping identify overweight and non-compliant vehicles, the system aims to enable more targeted enforcement while supporting smoother movement for compliant freight traffic. Quarterhill will also deliver calibration, testing, training, and ongoing maintenance services throughout the contract term.
