Washington Metropolitan Area Transit Authority has ordered 100 hybrid-electric and battery-electric buses from New Flyer
New Flyer has received an order for 100 transit buses from the Washington Metropolitan Area Transit Authority (Metro), comprising 75 Xcelsior hybrid-electric and 25 Xcelsior Charge NG battery-electric forty-foot vehicles. The options were exercised from New Flyer’s fourth-quarter backlog and will be supported by federal, state and local funding, including funds from the Federal Transit Administration’s Low or No Emission grant programme.
The buses will replace end-of-life vehicles and support Metro’s five-year Strategic Transformation Plan. Metro operates America’s fifth-largest bus network, serving more than four million people across 1,500 square miles in the District of Columbia, Maryland and Virginia.

In a statement, Chris Stoddart, President of North American Bus and Coach at NFI, said: “As Metro phases out aging buses, New Flyer’s Buy America-compliant, advanced hybrid and battery-electric vehicles will boost the efficiency, power, and overall service quality of its transit system.”
Randy Clarke, General Manager and Chief Executive of Metro, added: “These new hybrid and battery-electric buses allow us to replace aging vehicles, improve the customer experience, and continue modernizing our fleet while reducing emissions across the region.”
The order follows a base order of 100 New Flyer hybrid-electric buses announced in February 2025 under a five-year contract.
