Mazda ADAS study shows compounding crash claim benefits

Mazda’s most comprehensive ADAS bundle cuts PDL claims by 39%, according to new research from the Highway Loss Data Institute

A study by the Highway Loss Data Institute (HLDI) has found that Mazda’s advanced driver assistance systems (ADAS) deliver compounding crash reduction benefits when bundled together, with the most comprehensive package cutting property damage liability (PDL) claims by 39% compared with 13% for the most basic bundle. The analysis examined 2015–2023 Mazda vehicles across six feature bundles and four stand-alone systems.

The most basic bundle combined front automatic emergency braking (AEB) with forward collision warning. The most comprehensive added pedestrian detection, adaptive cruise control, high beam assist, lane departure warning and prevention, rear AEB, and Mazda’s Driver Attention Alert system. Front AEB with pedestrian detection and rear AEB produced the most significant additional reductions, with rear AEB proving particularly effective at eliminating low-speed parking lot collisions.

Mazda’s blind spot monitoring with rear cross traffic alert was also associated with nearly 10% lower PDL claim frequency and 13% lower bodily injury liability (BIL) claim frequency. Some features were linked to increases in claim severity, attributed to sensor replacement costs, though nearly all bundles were associated with lower total losses under PDL coverage.

In a statement, Jennifer Morrison, Director of Vehicle Safety Strategy at Mazda North American Operations, said: “This independent research underscores the value of our holistic, human-centric approach to crash avoidance and the importance of making these technologies broadly accessible.”

Mazda received eight 2026 Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) Top Safety Pick+ awards, more than any other brand.
