Honda earns first North America carbon certification

American Honda’s Torrance, California campus is the first Honda site in North America to achieve CarbonNeutral building Certification

American Honda Motor Co. has achieved CarbonNeutral building Certification at its US sales headquarters in Torrance, California, becoming the first Honda site in North America to receive the certification, which covers Scope 1 direct emissions and Scope 2 indirect emissions from energy use. The 101-acre campus, which employs 2,400 associates and serves as the company’s US sales headquarters alongside product design studios and a parts distribution centre, has been designated as Honda’s first Innovation Site in North America to test technologies and processes for potential rollout across its operations.

Honda said it has reduced annual carbon emissions at the site by more than 2,000 metric tons through on-site upgrades and an additional 2,600 metric tons through a 120MW virtual power purchase agreement. Residual emissions were offset through carbon credits resulting in 1,800 metric tons of soil carbon removals via regenerative agriculture practices.

The campus operates one of Southern California’s largest on-site solar arrays, producing 3,300MWh annually to supply 22% of its power requirements. Enhanced recycling systems divert an average of 95% of campus waste from landfills.

“Achieving CarbonNeutral building Certification at our US sales headquarters establishes a blueprint for our Honda Innovation Site concept, helping accelerate the decarbonisation of Honda operations across North America,” Director of Sustainability Strategy James Reeves said.
