Google is open-sourcing AAOS SDV, an extension of Android Automotive OS covering the non-safety software stack of software-defined vehicles
Google is open-sourcing Android Automotive OS for Software-Defined Vehicles (AAOS SDV), an extension of its existing Android Automotive OS (AAOS) platform designed to provide a common open infrastructure for the non-safety software components of software-defined vehicles (SDVs). The platform is being developed in collaboration with automotive partners including Renault Group and Qualcomm, with an open-source release planned for later in 2026.
AAOS SDV extends beyond the in-car infotainment screen to address the broader vehicle software stack, aiming to reduce the fragmentation that results from manufacturers integrating software modules from multiple suppliers across differing architectures. Google says the platform will allow automakers to reduce development complexity and focus resources on differentiating features and customer experiences rather than underlying infrastructure.
The move builds on the existing AAOS platform, which has been adopted across dozens of vehicle brands to deliver app access and infotainment functionality. AAOS SDV is intended to bring greater cohesion to in-car experiences and accelerate the delivery of over-the-air (OTA) updates to production vehicles.
