Ettifos has validated V2X tolling interoperability with Audi and Kapsch TrafficCom in live demonstrations held in North Carolina
Ettifos has completed real-world vehicle-to-infrastructure (V2X) tolling demonstrations in North Carolina in collaboration with Audi and Kapsch TrafficCom, validating interoperable, standards-based communication between Ettifos’ V2X-AIR onboard unit (OBU) and Kapsch’s commercially deployed roadside units (RSUs). The demonstrations were conducted on 26 March as part of the OmniAir Consortium V2X Tolling Workshop.
Two scenarios were tested. The first used an Audi vehicle equipped with Ettifos’ V2X-AIR OBU, establishing continuous PC5-based communication with Kapsch’s RSUs as the vehicle passed through a tolling zone, with transaction acknowledgements displayed on the in-vehicle screen. The second demonstrated an aftermarket, dashboard-mounted configuration of the same OBU, processing tolling events and Traveler Information Messages in real time via Ettifos’ application interface — a deployment model intended for retrofitting existing fleets ahead of broader OEM integration.
Ettifos said both implementations confirmed multi-vendor interoperability across Audi vehicles, its aftermarket OBU, and Kapsch roadside infrastructure under live operating conditions. The V2X-AIR unit is Build America, Buy America (BABA) compliant, a requirement for devices used in federally funded US infrastructure projects.
In a statement, Hojun Kim, Chief Executive Officer of Ettifos, said: “This collaboration demonstrates the importance of interoperability in enabling scalable V2X tolling across the ecosystem, highlighting Ettifos’ role in delivering a solution that supports both OEM and aftermarket implementations for immediate deployment.”
Jason Conley, Executive Director of OmniAir Consortium, added: “Industry collaboration, like this joint demonstration by Ettifos, Kapsch, and Audi, is key to deploying V2X tolling solutions at scale.”
