Einride has published a voluntary safety self-assessment for its SAE Level 4 cab-less trucks, covering design, testing and deployment
Einride has published a Voluntary Safety Self-Assessment (VSSA) for its autonomous heavy-duty trucks, becoming what it describes as the first operator of SAE Level 4 cab-less trucks to do so. The document outlines the company’s approach to the safe design, testing, deployment and operation of its all-electric, driverless freight vehicles.
The VSSA details the safety framework underpinning Einride’s autonomous technology platform, which combines its AI-powered optimisation software Saga AI with the Einride Driver, an in-house autonomous drive system developed for driverless freight operations. The safety case is audited by third parties and aligned with recognised standards including UL 4600, ISO 26262 and ISO/PAS 21448, covering the vehicle’s operational design domain, fallback strategies and lifecycle safety obligations.

Einride’s cab-less truck features redundancy across steering, braking, power, sensing and compute systems and uses a combination of machine learning-based driving with an independent deterministic safety checker. Sensor coverage spans camera, radar and lidar, complemented by high-definition mapping. The VSSA also covers vehicle cybersecurity aligned with ISO 21434 and ISO 27001, event data recording, emergency response planning and first-responder training.
The company says it continues to engage with the US Department of Transportation, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) and international authorities as it expands commercial autonomous operations.
