The agreement was signed during German Chancellor Friedrich Merz’s visit to China alongside a business delegation
CATL and BMW Group have signed a memorandum of understanding (MOU) in Beijing to collaborate on battery passport pilot projects and cross-border data transfer. The agreement, signed on 25 February during German Chancellor Friedrich Merz’s visit to China, expands the companies’ partnership from product-level cooperation to institutional coordination.
Under the MOU, CATL and BMW will collaborate on pilot projects for cross-border data transfer under the battery passport scenario, including trusted data exchange, carbon accounting methodologies and tools for calculating battery carbon footprints. The projects will use the Catena-X standardised trusted automotive data ecosystem.
The companies say the pilot projects are intended to support technical standards alignment, drive coherent policy frameworks and foster long-term industrial stability. CATL and BMW say they are conducting practices for China-EU regulatory compliance and driving the demonstration of global battery information and data standards.
CATL and BMW have been strategic partners since 2012, collaborating on battery production, joint research and development and sustainable supply chains. The companies say the new MOU reinforces their shared commitment to advancing electric mobility.
Through the cooperation, both parties say they will enhance their digital management and exchange capabilities, strengthening compliance with EU market access regulations and boosting the low-carbon competitiveness of their products.
