Canada announces CA$10.6m for EV charging rollout

Natural Resources Canada has allocated CA$10.6m across 14 projects to install more than 1,600 electric vehicle chargers nationwide

Canada’s federal government has announced CA$10.6m (US$7.6m) in funding for 14 electric vehicle (EV) charging infrastructure projects across the country, which will deliver more than 1,600 new chargers nationwide. The announcement was made by Parliamentary Secretary Karim Bardeesy at the EV & Charging Expo in Toronto on behalf of Energy and Natural Resources Minister Tim Hodgson.

Natural Resources Canada is also providing CA$1.1m (US$792,000) to extend Plug’n Drive’s cross-country EV test drive tour, first launched in 2024. The tour targets smaller communities where EV adoption is lower, offering residents the chance to compare multiple EV models and consult EV specialists.

The charging investment forms part of Canada’s new Auto Strategy, which covers vehicle electrification, autonomous technologies and battery supply chains. Canada has committed more than CA$1.2bn (US$863m) to EV charging and hydrogen refuelling infrastructure since 2016.

In a statement, Tim Hodgson said: “Today’s announcement shows how we are getting more EV chargers built every month so that Canadians can choose EVs with confidence.” Bardeesy added: “We are investing in EV chargers where Canadians need them most in Toronto and beyond, making it easier for drivers to get to where they live, work and play.”
