BYD launches Song Ultra EV with Flash Charging starting under $22,000

The electric SUV features Blade Battery 2.0 and ultra-fast charging, securing over 21,500 pre-orders in its first 20 days.

BYD officially launched the Song Ultra EV in China on March 26, starting at 151,900 yuan ($22,000), well below earlier expectations of 220,000 yuan ($31,900) and its 155,000 yuan ($22,500) pre-sale price. The electric SUV is offered in four trims, ranging up to 179,900 yuan ($26,000), and all models come with BYD’s Blade Battery 2.0 and two battery pack options: 68.4 kWh and 82.7 kWh, delivering CLTC ranges of 605 km and 710 km.

The Song Ultra EV features BYD’s Flash Charging technology, enabling a 10% to 70% charge in just 5 minutes. A full 97% charge takes 9 minutes, and in temperatures as low as -30°C (-20°F), it requires only 12 minutes. Pre-order customers received 18 months of free Flash Charging, while all buyers now receive one year of free charging with any trim.

Since pre-orders opened on March 6, BYD has secured 21,586 reservations in 20 days. Store visits increased 40% within 72 hours of the launch, with an average of 15 vehicles sold per store. About 70% of buyers chose the longer-range 710 km version, highlighting strong demand for extended range and fast-charging capability.

The Song Ultra EV is equipped with a rear-mounted electric motor producing 362 hp (270 kW) and BYD’s DiSus-C intelligent body control system, which adjusts damping to reduce bumps and vibrations. Interior features include a 15.6″ central infotainment display, a 10.25″ driver cluster, and a 26″ head-up display.

Top trims offer BYD’s God’s Eye B package, which adds a roof-mounted LiDAR and 27 sensors for Level 3 highway and city driving assistance, as well as automated parking. Approximately 45% of buyers opted for this advanced driver-assistance package.

The SUV measures 4,850 mm in length, 1,910 mm in width, and 1,670 mm in height, with a 2,840 mm wheelbase, slightly larger than the Song L DM-i PHEV. Buyers have compared the Song Ultra EV to BYD’s Sealion 06 EV, as well as models from XPeng, Leapmotor, Deepal, and Tesla.
