BorgWarner wins European REEV drive module deal

BorgWarner will supply an 800-volt integrated drive module to a premium European automaker for range-extended vehicles

BorgWarner has secured a contract with an unnamed premium European automaker to supply an 800-volt integrated drive module for range-extended electric vehicles. Mass production is scheduled to begin in 2029.

The integrated drive module features a single electric machine that provides both generator and propulsion functions, combining two major range extender capabilities into one unit. The system incorporates an inverter, two clutches, and a dual-mass flywheel, and is paired with the customer’s internal combustion engine.

BorgWarner said the design enables all-wheel drive mode when required, in addition to energy-efficient generator functionality. The inverter uses the company’s next-generation Viper power switches and dual-side cooled power module technology.

The supplier said its China team led development of the solution in collaboration with global engineering teams.

Dr Stefan Demmerle, Vice President of BorgWarner and President and General Manager of PowerDrive Systems, said: “With the China team taking the lead and collaborating with a global team, we have created a highly integrated solution that balances performance, efficiency, and packaging. We are proud to support our customer with innovative technology for its next-generation range extended vehicles.”
