BorgWarner expands battery management contract

BorgWarner has expanded a battery management system contract with a global automaker for BEV and PHEV applications from 2029

BorgWarner has secured an expanded battery management system contract with an unnamed global automaker, building on a programme that has been in production since 2023. The supplier said the expanded award will support additional B-segment and C-segment passenger cars, as well as light commercial vehicles, for battery electric vehicle (BEV) and plug-in hybrid electric vehicle (PHEV) applications from 2029.

The modular system comprises a central battery monitoring unit connected to cell monitoring units located at the battery modules. Together, they monitor charge level, battery health, and temperatures, measure cell voltages, and perform passive cell balancing.

The architecture supports DC fast charging communication and meets Automotive Safety Integrity Level D functional safety requirements. BorgWarner said the system can be configured for battery packs operating up to 800 volts.

Dr Stefan Demmerle, Vice President of BorgWarner and President and General Manager of BorgWarner PowerDrive Systems, said: “As our customer adds new electrified vehicle lines, we’re upgrading compatibility to help them scale efficiently while maintaining the safety, durability and performance expectations that drivers rely on.”

BorgWarner said the compact module-level units enable flexible packaging options, with an electronics platform that can be upgraded to support future functions.
