Aptiv, Wind River demo V2X sensor sharing solution

Aptiv and Wind River are demonstrating a V2X solution that shares sensor data between vehicles using Verizon’s 5G network

Aptiv and Wind River are demonstrating a proof-of-concept vehicle-to-everything (V2X) solution at MWC Barcelona that enables vehicles to share sensor data using Verizon’s 5G network and Edge Transportation Exchange platform. The companies say the solution allows vehicles to “see beyond line-of-sight” by incorporating live sensor data from nearby vehicles into onboard sensor fusion systems.

The demonstration shows how vehicles equipped with Aptiv’s advanced driver assistance systems (ADAS), including radar and vision perception technologies, can transmit environmental data through the 5G network to support safety-critical features such as automatic emergency braking. Wind River, an Aptiv company, provides the V2X solution stack that integrates with Verizon’s edge computing infrastructure.

Aptiv says the solution uses hardware commonly available on modern vehicles combined with standardised APIs, enabling vehicles from different manufacturers to share data without dedicated hardware or individual pairing validation. This differs from earlier V2X pilots that required direct interoperability testing between automakers.

In a statement, Craig Turner, Vice President and Managing Director of Digital Cockpit and Middleware at Aptiv, said: “This demonstration shows how edge cloud platforms, low-latency networks, and intelligent vehicles can be combined into a scalable V2X solution that moves beyond pilots and toward real-world deployment.”

Beyond collision avoidance and hazard detection, Aptiv says the architecture could support cooperative traffic management, enhanced navigation and automated driving features.
