Mercedes-Benz Econic extends 20-year Chemnitz fleet role

Mercedes-Benz has handed over eleven new Econic trucks to Chemnitz’s waste management service, where the model has been in use for around two decades

The Waste Management and City Cleaning Service of the City of Chemnitz has taken delivery of eleven new Mercedes-Benz Econic trucks, expanding a fleet relationship that spans around 20 years. The vehicles were handed over at the Mercedes-Benz Trucks Customer Experience Center in Wörth am Rhein and will operate as rear loaders fitted with compactor bodies from various manufacturers across the Chemnitz urban area in single-shift operation.

Each vehicle is typically staffed by two to three crew members. The Econic’s low entry height is cited as a key operational advantage for waste collection duties, where drivers and crew enter and exit the vehicle frequently throughout a shift. Wide-format cab glazing, cameras and reversing assistance systems complement the ergonomic design.

Sven Postel, Head of Department at the Waste Management and City Cleaning Service of the City of Chemnitz, said: “The Econic has proven itself in our daily operations for many years. The combination of low entry height and great visibility brings real benefits for our employees while also enhancing safety in urban traffic.”

André Ulbricht, from Truck Sales at Schloz Wöllenstein in Chemnitz, added: “We are pleased to continue our long-standing cooperation with the Waste Management and City Cleaning Service of the City of Chemnitz through this vehicle handover. The Econic is perfectly tailored to the needs of municipal waste collection.”
