Marelli’s ZCU recognised for E/E architecture simplification role

Marelli’s Zone Control Unit has received a commendable honour at the Digital Engineering Awards 2026 for its role in simplifying vehicle E/E architecture for SDVs

Marelli’s Zone Control Unit (ZCU) has received a commendable honour in the Engineering Product of the Year category at the Digital Engineering Awards 2026, held in Boston on 12 March. The award recognises the unit’s role in consolidating vehicle electrical and electronic (E/E) architecture by replacing multiple dedicated electronic control units (ECUs) with a single, cross-domain platform.

Built on Marelli’s EliteZone platform, the ZCU supports next-generation ethernet capabilities, virtualisation technologies, hardware accelerators and safety-compliant software up to ASIL D. It features two-port gigabit ethernet, more than 20 CAN and LIN interfaces, an integrated hypervisor and a data routing engine, while accommodating 48V system requirements with dedicated power input and e-fuse-protected output. By simplifying wiring layouts, the unit reduces wiring harness weight by approximately 30% compared with existing zonal control systems.

The ZCU uses a service-oriented architecture (SOA), allowing each ECU to expose services that other modules can subscribe to, decoupling software development from hardware and improving scalability across vehicle segments. The approach is designed to shorten development cycles and simplify supply chains for vehicle makers.

In a statement, Ravi Tallapragada, President of Marelli’s Electronics business, said: “By bringing cross-domain control into a single, scalable platform, our ZCU enables vehicle makers to innovate at speed.
