Mercedes sources the new EQS battery from its Hedelfingen factory and the electric drive unit from Untertürkheim, 20km away
Mercedes-Benz has ramped up series production of three updated top-end models, the S-Class, Mercedes-Maybach S-Class and EQS, at its Sindelfingen plant in Germany within a three-month window. The automaker says all three vehicles are produced on a single flexible line at Factory 56, regardless of whether they use fully electric or hybrid powertrains.
Factory 56, opened in 2020, uses more than 400 automated guided vehicles (AGVs) in place of a traditional assembly line across two TecLines. Mercedes-Benz integrates the assembly stations into MO360, its digital production ecosystem, with its MB.OS operating system and AI applications also deployed in the hall.

In a statement, Michael Schiebe, Member of the Board of Management for Production, Quality and Supply Chain Management at Mercedes-Benz Group, said: “The successful ramp-up of our three updated top-end models at Factory 56 impressively illustrates what our success is based on: innovative products, exceptional teams and forward-looking production. We’re strengthening Sindelfingen as a global centre of excellence for the production of vehicles in the top-end segment.”
The plant runs a local-for-local strategy that sources the new EQS battery from the Hedelfingen battery factory, with the electric drive unit and axles supplied from the Untertürkheim plant some 20 kilometres away. Sindelfingen also houses the company’s MANUFAKTUR Studio, which can produce up to 20 customised vehicles a day.
