BMW has unveiled the iX3 Flow Edition at Auto China 2026 in Beijing, the first series-ready production car to carry e-paper technology on its exterior. The car uses E Ink’s Prism electrophoretic film embedded in the bonnet, allowing the surface to change appearance on demand through eight pre-loaded animation designs.

The integration marks the first time E Ink’s technology has been signed off for use on a production vehicle’s exterior. Prism has passed BMW’s automotive quality testing, including durability and weathering requirements that have so far kept e-paper to interior or concept-car applications.

The technology uses millions of microcapsules containing charged particles that respond to electrical signals, drawing power only during transitions. The result is a near-zero standby draw, which BMW and E Ink say makes the system viable for routine use rather than show-piece prototypes.

Drivers can switch between the eight animations to match mood or driving context, with the system framed by both companies as a step in personalisation rather than a functional display.

The iX3 Flow Edition follows a string of joint concept cars between the two companies, including the original BMW iX Flow shown at CES 2022 in monochrome, the BMW i Vision Dee in 2023 with full-colour Prism technology, and the BMW i5 Flow Nostokana art-led variant. The Beijing reveal positions colour-changing exteriors as a route from concept novelty to scalable bodywork features in future BMW models.
