BMW i7 adopts Gen6 battery with lower carbon impact

BMW says Gen6 battery cells in the new i7 carry a supply chain CO2 footprint roughly 33% lower than the outgoing Gen5 cells

BMW says the sixth-generation (Gen6) battery cells used in the new i7 carry a supply chain CO2 equivalent footprint approximately 33% lower than the previous Gen5 cells. The automaker said the reduction is achieved through a combination of secondary raw materials for lithium, cobalt and nickel, and the exclusive use of renewable energy in cell and active material production.

From 2026, selected wheel designs for the i7 will also be available with 70% secondary aluminium, with remaining primary aluminium electrolysis and rim production partly powered by renewables. BMW said all components using secondary materials meet the same quality standards as conventional parts.

All variants of the new 7 Series are produced at BMW Group Plant Dingolfing in Lower Bavaria, which sources 100% of its external electricity from renewable sources. The facility commissioned a rooftop photovoltaic system of almost 11 MWp in late 2025, alongside a biomass heating plant for partially renewable local heat supply.

BMW said the measures form part of its target to reduce CO2 equivalent emissions by at least 40 million tonnes from 2019 levels by 2030, in line with its commitment to reaching net zero no later than 2050.
