Opel is joining the Formula E grid from the 2026/27 season, building on five years of electric rally experience under the GSE sub-brand
Opel will enter the ABB FIA Formula E World Championship as a factory team from the 2026/27 season, competing under the Opel GSE Formula E Team name. The announcement was made jointly by Opel Chief Executive Florian Huettl and Formula E Chief Executive Jeff Dodds at the Jarama circuit in Spain and coincides with the series’ transition to GEN4 machinery.

GEN4 cars produce a peak output of up to 600 kW in qualifying and attack mode, an increase of 250 kW over the previous generation, and feature permanent all-wheel drive. Energy recovery capacity rises to up to 700 kW. The team’s motorsport operations are led by Jörg Schrott, who also serves as Director of Opel Motorsport, and will draw on technical support from Stellantis Motorsport’s GEN4 development programme.
The Formula E entry builds on Opel’s existing electric motorsport programme. In 2021, the company launched the ADAC Opel Electric Rally Cup, the first electric one-make rally series, using the Corsa Rally Electric. From the forthcoming 2026/27 rally season, participants will switch to the Mokka GSE Rally, which produces up to 207 kW and 345 Nm, sharing its high-voltage components with the road-going Mokka GSE production model.

In a statement, Huettl said: “Joining Formula E marks a new milestone for Opel on our journey towards an electric future. Our Opel GSE Formula E Team will show what our brand stands for: German engineering, bold design and electrified performance.”
The team will make its first public appearance at the official GEN4 launch at Paul Ricard in April.
