New Flyer opens Canadian bus production facility

NFI Group says the Winnipeg facility marks the return of full domestic bus production to Canada for the first time in 15 years

NFI Group has officially opened New Flyer’s Customer Acceptance and Delivery facility in Winnipeg, Canada, marking what the company says is the return of full domestic bus production to the city for the first time in 15 years. The facility enables start-to-finish manufacturing of heavy-duty transit vehicles, including zero-emission buses, for Canadian customers.

Construction began in late 2024, with the first buses entering production in September 2025. NFI delivered the first vehicle from the facility to Durham Transit in December 2025. The company says the site will expand New Flyer’s production capacity by up to 240 equivalent units per year by 2027, with four line entries expected per week.

The project received federal and provincial investment alongside NFI’s internal funding. NFI says the facility also allows New Flyer’s US sites to increase their focus on American customers.

In a statement, John Sapp, President and Chief Executive Officer of NFI Group, said: “This is a major milestone for our company, the province and the country as it creates hundreds of highly skilled jobs and a stronger domestic supply chain, alongside enhanced zero-emission production capabilities.”

Manitoba Premier Wab Kinew added: “By bringing full bus manufacturing back to Winnipeg, this facility strengthens our domestic supply chain, creates good jobs, and reinforces Manitoba’s position at the cutting edge of zero-emission transportation technology.”
