Valeo and Kapsch TrafficCom have partnered to develop a vehicle-to-everything tolling solution using direct V2X communication
Valeo and Kapsch TrafficCom have announced a partnership to develop a vehicle-to-everything (V2X) tolling solution that enables vehicles to communicate directly with roadside infrastructure to complete toll transactions automatically, with a live demonstration scheduled at the 5G Automotive Association meeting in Sacramento from 2-5 February. The system combines Valeo’s cellular V2X onboard unit with Kapsch’s roadside unit, using PC5-based SAE J3217 message exchange to initiate secure transactions as vehicles approach tolling points.
The demonstration will feature a Valeo autonomous vehicle initiating toll transactions through direct communication with Kapsch infrastructure. Messages flow bi-directionally between the vehicle and tolling platform, with security credentials provided by Microsec. Transaction status is displayed on the vehicle’s in-dash display.
In a statement, Jeffrey Shay, President of Valeo North America, said: “This is a landmark step toward integrating connected vehicle technologies with existing ADAS and interior experience features. Together with Kapsch, we are creating a truly seamless experience for drivers and paving the way for a new ecosystem of connected services.”
JB Kendrick, President of Kapsch TrafficCom North America, added: “With V2X technology, we are entering the era where the vehicle itself is the payment device. This collaboration with Valeo proves that by adhering to open standards like SAE J3217, we can establish the platform that connects automotive innovation with roadside infrastructure.”
The companies said the approach could reduce infrastructure costs for tolling operators while offering interoperability with existing RFID and video-based systems.
